Daivon Brown, 25, a Black man, was killed in Jackson, Michigan, in the final hours of December 31, 2018, after gunfire erupted on the city’s south side. In the early morning darkness, police were dispatched to the 300 block of Mitchell Street around 1:40 a.m. for a reported shooting. When officers arrived, they found him lying out in the street with apparent gunshot injuries, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
As news traveled through the neighborhood, the street itself seemed to tighten with fear and familiarity. Residents described the area as one where violence felt too close for comfort, and some were reluctant to be seen speaking about what happened, worried that attention could invite retaliation. One nearby resident, Kenneth Robinson, voiced a quiet dread that the next burst of violence could reach someone else’s front door—someone else’s family—yet also spoke as if living around danger had become an uneasy routine.
At first, investigators said they believed the victim was a 25-year-old from Jackson but had not yet been able to confirm his identity. Later the same day, police publicly identified him as Daivon Brown and said he had been shot and killed just before 2 a.m. They described the shooter as still at large and, as of those initial updates, reported that no arrests had been made. Detectives asked anyone with information to contact the Jackson Police Department, naming Detective Rick Burkart as a point of contact, and also noted that tips could be provided anonymously through CrimeStoppers.
