In the late hours of a Sunday in September 2016, a young life was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. Anthony Fareed Lamb, a 22-year-old man from Muskegon, was fatally shot in the abdomen in the parking lot of the Hookah Lounge located off of Butternut Drive on the north side of Holland, Michigan. The single gunshot wound proved to be fatal, and he succumbed to his injuries on September 11, 2016.
The events leading up to the shooting involved an altercation between two
groups of people. In the ensuing investigation, law enforcement officials questioned several witnesses, though not all were cooperative. Their efforts, however, led to the identification of suspects and subsequent arrests.
One of the individuals taken into custody was Adam Young, a 27-year-old from Fennville, who was later identified as Aaron Joshua-John Young. He was apprehended following a car crash that occurred approximately four hours after the deadly shooting. Initially, Young was charged with lying to detectives who determined he was present at the scene of the crime. Another 28-year-old man, who remains unnamed in reports, was also arrested on unrelated outstanding charges after being treated for a gunshot wound to his lower leg sustained during the same incident.
After a thorough investigation, Aaron Joshua-John Young faced trial for his involvement in Anthony Lamb's death. In December 2017, after about two full days of deliberation, an Ottawa County Circuit Court jury found him guilty of second-degree murder, carrying a concealed weapon, and felony firearm charges. Prosecutors successfully argued that Young had instigated the conflict that led to the shooting. During the trial, Young took the stand in his own defense, claiming he acted in self-defense. The jury, however, sided with the prosecution's narrative. Two other individuals involved in the incident received sentences for lesser crimes. For his role in the death of Anthony Lamb, Aaron Joshua-John Young faced the possibility of life in prison.
