In the winter of 2015, a young man’s life was tragically cut short in Holland, Michigan. Derrick D’Andre Ruff-Shingles, a 22-year-old male, was fatally shot on January 5th. The incident took place at the Harbor Village Apartments located on West 40th Street.
Following the shooting, an investigation was launched, which soon led to a person of interest. Eighteen-year-old Davon Jordan Walker was taken into custody in connection with the death of Ruff-Shingles.
Walker, who had a history of violent crime, was subsequently charged with manslaughter.
As the legal proceedings began, Walker was ordered to stand trial for the shooting. However, instead of proceeding to a jury trial, he accepted a plea deal. Walker pleaded guilty to the charge of manslaughter. In exchange for his plea, a felony firearms charge against him was dropped. During the court proceedings, a tearful Walker claimed that the shooting was an accident, stating he had been playing around with the gun, pointed it at his friend, and it accidentally discharged.
The plea deal was met with anguish and protest from the family of Derrick D’Andre Ruff-Shingles. His mother, Lisa Ruff, traveled from Chicago to voice her family's heartbreak and outrage. They believed the charge of manslaughter was an insult and that Walker should have faced a first-degree murder charge. The family disputed the nature of the relationship between Derrick and Davon, stating they were merely acquaintances and not friends as Walker had implied. They felt that the witnesses, who were friends with Walker, were not truthful in their accounts of the events. Despite their emotional pleas for what they considered justice, the plea deal was upheld.
