In the early morning hours of March 3, 2023, the life of 54-year-old Aaron James Barlow of Covert, Michigan, was tragically cut short in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Abbey Court in Holland. Barlow, a male, was discovered inside a car with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the swift arrival of first responders and their efforts to provide medical aid, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Holland Police officers were dispatched to the area around 3:00 a.m.
following reports of a man with a gun and shots being fired. Upon their arrival, they witnessed a suspect fleeing the scene on foot, prompting an extensive hours-long search of the vicinity. The search involved a coordinated effort between the Holland Police Department, Ottawa County Sheriff's deputies, and a Michigan State Police trooper, who established a perimeter. Canine teams and drones were deployed to track the suspect. The search led to a shelter-in-place advisory for nearby residents and a delay in the start of classes at a local elementary school.
Later that morning, at approximately 8:25 a.m., authorities received a tip about a suspicious person matching the suspect's description. This led them to the area of 12th Street and Dartmouth Avenue, where they took 54-year-old James Leonard Taylor of McDonough, Georgia, into custody without incident. Investigators determined that Taylor and Barlow were known to each other and that neither of them resided at the apartment complex where the shooting occurred, suggesting the incident was a targeted attack.
James Leonard Taylor was subsequently charged with open murder and felony firearm. He was arraigned in the 58th District Court, where he was denied bond. In June 2024, a jury in the 20th Circuit Court found Taylor guilty of second-degree murder and felony firearm. The following month, he was sentenced to a minimum of 24-and-a-half-years in prison for the murder of Aaron Barlow.
