In the summer of 2022, a young man's life was cut short in a burst of violence on a quiet street in Holland, Michigan. Antory Mijia Burrell, a 19-year-old male, was riding his bicycle with his friend, 18-year-old Demontae Knight Jr., on the evening of June 1st. As they made their way along College Avenue, between 16th and 17th streets, the peaceful evening was shattered by the sound of gunfire.
Both Burrell and Knight were struck by bullets.
When officers from the Holland Department of Public Safety arrived at the scene, they found the two young men with gunshot wounds. Emergency services transported both victims to Holland Hospital. Tragically, Antory Burrell was pronounced deceased. Demontae Knight Jr. was listed in critical condition and later transferred to another hospital for further treatment. In a harrowing detail that emerged later, Knight reportedly told police that after being shot, he lay on the ground and pretended to be dead, witnessing the assailant shoot Burrell again before leaving the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect who was known to the victims, indicating that this was not a random act of violence. The day after the shooting, authorities arrested 19-year-old Cinecca Madison of Holland in connection with the incident. In a strange twist, it was revealed that Madison himself had been the one to call 911 to report the shooting.
The Ottawa County Prosecutor's Office formally charged Cinecca Madison with one count of open murder for the death of Antory Burrell, one count of assault with intent to commit murder for the shooting of Demontae Knight Jr., and two counts of felony firearm. During his arraignment in the 58th District Court, Madison was denied bond. The community was left to mourn the loss of a young man described by his family as creative, passionate, and deeply loyal. Known to his loved ones as 'Torey,' 'T2,' or 'T-Rell,' his untimely death left a void in the lives of his family and friends.
