In the autumn of 2023, the life of 36-year-old Shevell Cordell Shelton, a male resident of Holland, Michigan, was tragically cut short. On the evening of September 24th, deputies from the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the Willow Woods condominium complex on 120th Avenue. Inside one of the units, they discovered Shelton's body; he had sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
The nature of the incident immediately prompted a homicide investigation, with detectives noting that the circumstances pointed towards a possible domestic situation.
The investigation into Shelton's death quickly focused on a person of interest who was known to the victim. Authorities identified 39-year-old Robert Lee Mayweather of Holland as the primary suspect. Investigators learned that Mayweather and Shelton were not strangers and shared mutual acquaintances. As the case against Mayweather solidified, the Ottawa County Prosecuting Attorney's Office issued a warrant for his arrest.
On the night of October 5, 2023, the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force located and apprehended Robert Lee Mayweather in the Grand Rapids area. He was taken into custody without incident and lodged at the Ottawa County Jail. The following day, Mayweather was arraigned in 58th District Court on charges of open murder and felony firearms. He was denied bond and remains incarcerated while awaiting further court proceedings. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office has indicated that the investigation is ongoing and encourages anyone with information to come forward.
