On a spring afternoon in Holland, Michigan, a family gathering turned into a scene of tragedy. Miguel Raul Zamudio, a 41-year-old White / Caucasian male, was visiting with family outside his father's home on April 13, 2024. The ordinary day was shattered at approximately 2:15 p.m. when a man, later identified as 27-year-old Jerell Alexander Lindsey, approached the home located in the 300 block of West 19th Street armed with a firearm.
As Zamudio and his family members saw the armed man
approaching, they attempted to retreat into the house for safety. However, Lindsey continued toward them and fatally shot Zamudio in the head in the driveway. There was no known prior connection between Lindsey and Zamudio or his family, making the attack appear random. Earlier that day, Lindsey had reportedly been involved in a domestic incident where he threatened his girlfriend with a gun.
Following the shooting, Lindsey entered a neighboring home where he had no connection and made false claims about the presence of a bomb and other explosives. This prompted the evacuation of nearby residences while bomb technicians from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to the scene. No explosive devices were found. Lindsey was taken into custody as he exited the adjacent house.
Miguel Raul Zamudio was transported to a local hospital and then transferred to Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, where he was pronounced dead the following day, April 14, 2024. Jerell Alexander Lindsey was initially charged with open murder and was denied bond. In May 2025, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Zamudio, a father of two, was remembered by his family as a loving and protective man who enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time with his loved ones. In his death, he became an organ donor, giving the gift of life to at least four other individuals.
