In a tragic event that unfolded in Holland, Michigan, 40-year-old Gilberto Andrade-Pena was killed in a double homicide on December 7, 2015. The incident, which also claimed the life of 37-year-old Mani Khounvongsa, took place at an apartment on Stratford Way. Andrade-Pena was fatally shot inside the residence.
The investigation into the deaths quickly identified 51-year-old Bounthavee Nerasin as the suspect.
Authorities believed Nerasin had specifically targeted both Andrade-Pena and Khounvongsa. Khounvongsa was discovered shot in a hallway outside the apartment unit, while Andrade-Pena was found deceased inside. Two other individuals were present in the apartment at the time of the shooting but were not injured.
The motive for the killings appeared to be jealousy, with friends and family describing the situation as a 'love triangle.' Nerasin was reportedly Khounvongsa's ex-boyfriend. Friends of the victims believed Nerasin was jealous of the new relationship between Khounvongsa and Andrade-Pena.
Less than a day after the double homicide, the search for the suspect came to a somber conclusion. Bounthavee Nerasin was found deceased inside his parked vehicle outside of the Lao Buddhist Temple on Holland's North Side. His death was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest. Due to the suspect's suicide, there were no arrests or subsequent trial in this case.
