On the evening of April 29, 2018, emergency responders were dispatched to a residence on Westland Court in Holland Township, Michigan, following reports of a shooting. The incident occurred around 5:00 p.m. when authorities received calls from family members who had fled the home after hearing gunfire. Law enforcement officers, including deputies from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and members of the critical response team, quickly surrounded the property.
Upon entering the home after a period of surveillance to assess the situation, police discovered the bodies of three individuals inside.
The victims were identified as 51-year-old Thomas Rattanovong and 34-year-old Latthida Kommona, who both resided at the home. The third individual found deceased at the scene was identified as 43-year-old Phonphoune Loy Kaiyarath. Investigators determined that all three had died from gunshot wounds. During the initial response, police had treated the situation as an active shooter event, but it was later confirmed that the threat was contained within the residence.
Subsequent investigations by the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office revealed that the tragedy was a double murder-suicide. Authorities identified Phonphoune Loy Kaiyarath as the suspect who had entered the home armed with a handgun. Detectives learned that there was a domestic relationship involving the individuals, with reports suggesting a connection between Kommona and Kaiyarath. Evidence collected at the scene and witness statements indicated that Kaiyarath shot Rattanovong and Kommona before turning the weapon on himself.
Due to the death of the suspect at the scene, there were no arrests or trials in connection with the case. The Sheriff’s Office concluded that the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute and officially closed the investigation after ruling the deaths of Rattanovong and Kommona as homicides and Kaiyarath’s death as a suicide. The community in Holland was shaken by the violence, which was noted as one of several domestic-related shooting incidents in the area around that time.
