On a quiet Sunday morning in Holland, Michigan, the life of 20-year-old Victor Alexis Gil-Bravo was tragically cut short. On August 30, 2020, at approximately 7:15 a.m., gunshots echoed through the Leisure Estates Mobile Home Park on Butternut Drive. Victor was found outside his home, where he lived with his mother and younger siblings, suffering from several gunshot wounds to his torso. Despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office quickly determined his death to be a homicide.
The investigation into the young man's death moved swiftly as the community provided valuable information to law enforcement. Witnesses reported hearing the gunshots, and some saw a white SUV leaving the area shortly after the incident. Through witness statements, along with electronic and video evidence, investigators were able to identify a suspect by the following Monday. The suspect and Victor were known to each other and had arranged to meet prior to the fatal shooting.
The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Jose Eduardo Perez-Jaquez of Holland Township, was taken into custody after a period of surveillance. The Ottawa County Prosecutor's Office authorized charges of open murder and felony firearms against him. Perez-Jaquez was held in the Ottawa County Jail without bond.
Ultimately, just before his jury trial was set to begin, Jose Perez-Jaquez pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, admitting to firing the gun that killed Victor Gil-Bravo. In July 2022, he was sentenced to a minimum of 21 years and a maximum of 60 years in prison for the murder. He was also required to serve a two-year sentence for a weapons offense before beginning his sentence for second-degree murder.
