On a late September evening in Grand Rapids, a dispute escalated into a fatal encounter that ended the life of 38-year-old Joseph Charles Banks. The incident, which unfolded on September 26, 2016, stemmed from a verbal disagreement inside a residence on Eastern Avenue SE. In the ensuing violence, Banks was shot once in the chest. Critically wounded, he managed to flee to a nearby party store seeking help before he collapsed and died.
