On a late September evening in Grand Rapids, a dispute escalated into a fatal encounter that ended the life of 38-year-old Joseph Charles Banks. The incident, which unfolded on September 26, 2016, stemmed from a verbal disagreement inside a residence on Eastern Avenue SE. In the ensuing violence, Banks was shot once in the chest. Critically wounded, he managed to flee to a nearby party store seeking help before he collapsed and died.
The shooting also left Banks' 15-year-old stepson
seriously injured with a gunshot wound to the neck. Grand Rapids police officers who arrived at the scene performed CPR on the teenager, who was later transported to a local hospital and eventually recovered. Family members of Banks later described his actions as heroic, stating that he died while protecting his son and sister. In the days that followed, friends and family gathered for a candlelight vigil outside the O&E Party Store where he had succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to a suspect. A day after the incident, police arrested 22-year-old Martez McLaughlin. He was subsequently charged with open murder, assault with intent to murder, and felony firearm use. In February 2017, McLaughlin pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and felony firearm charges. The following month, he was sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison for the murder, with an additional mandatory two years for the firearm conviction.
