In the spring of 2017, a confrontation at a Benton Charter Township intersection culminated in the tragic death of 37-year-old Nicholaus Kling, a White male from Benton Harbor, Michigan. On May 1st, Kling approached a vehicle stopped at the corner of Red Arrow Highway and Benton Center Road. Inside the car was his recent ex-girlfriend and her new partner, 22-year-old Derrick Bailey. An altercation ensued, leading Bailey to fatally shoot Kling.
