On a spring evening in Benton-Harbor, Michigan, the sound of multiple gunshots pierced the air in the southeast part of the city. It was late on Friday, April 10, 2020, when patrolling officers heard the gunfire and rushed to the area to investigate. Near the intersection of Cross Street and Bishop Avenue, they found 19-year-old Marcas Purnell suffering from gunshot wounds. He was unresponsive.
