In the winter of 2019 in Benton Harbor, Michigan, the life of Samuel Brown, a Black/African American male, came to a tragic end amidst a murder investigation in which he was the primary suspect. His death on December 10, 2019, concluded a brief but intense search for the person responsible for the shooting death of his girlfriend, 29-year-old Quintina Jeffries, just two days earlier.

The events began to unfold on Sunday, December 8, 2019, when Jeffries was found shot to death. She and Brown were reportedly moving into a home together on West May Street when she was shot at least four times. As detectives from the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety and the Michigan State Police Major Case Unit investigated, evidence quickly pointed toward Brown as the suspect in what they described as a domestic assault that ended in a senseless death. Investigators noted they were receiving great cooperation from several potential witnesses.

As the investigation progressed and detectives were close to seeking a warrant for his arrest, they served a search warrant at Samuel Brown's apartment. However, shortly after the warrant was served on the evening of December 10, 2019, Brown took his own life. He shot himself in St. Joseph after attending a Benton Harbor-Dowagiac basketball game. In the hours leading up to his suicide, Brown had been active on Facebook, sharing photos and videos of himself with Jeffries and expressing grief over her death.

Following Brown's suicide, authorities stated they still had a few details to finalize in the investigation into Quintina Jeffries' murder but considered the case closed as there was no evidence of illegal drugs or gang violence involved, deeming it an isolated incident. No further arrests or suspects were identified in connection with Jeffries' murder.
