Miquan Cleotis Davis, a 20-year-old male from Benton Harbor, Michigan, passed away on Wednesday, June 2, 2021, at Lakeland Medical Center in St. Joseph. Born on March 8, 2001, in St. Joseph, he was a 2019 salutatorian graduate of the Dream Academy in Benton Harbor. Known for his devotion to his family, Miquan was a father to a son and a daughter. He was described as having an 'old-school soul,' with a love for the blues and vehicles. He was known for his gentle and kind nature, always putting others before himself and coming to the aid of his family whenever they needed him.
On the evening of his death, Miquan was sitting in a vehicle with his girlfriend at the Briarwood Apartment complex when they were approached by three individuals in a dark-colored car. The assailants attempted to rob the couple at gunpoint. During the incident, which occurred around 11:30 p.m., several gunshots were fired, and Miquan sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the chest.
In the investigation that followed, police arrested 18-year-old James Parker-Hersey in connection with the fatal shooting and armed robbery. He was charged with murder, armed robbery, and felony firearm. Parker-Hersey had also sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the hip during the incident and was initially identified as a victim. However, after a trial in 2022, he was acquitted of the charges. Authorities had indicated that they were seeking other individuals involved in the incident.
