In the autumn of 2021, the life of 17-year-old Quwang-Tri Jones was tragically cut short in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Known affectionately as Quan, he was a young man with a passion for basketball, track, and expressing himself through rap. On October 15, 2021, in a senseless act of violence, Jones was shot and left to die.
The investigation into his death led police to a suspect who was astonishingly young himself. Royal Robertson, a 14-year-old at the time of the incident, was arrested in connection with the murder. At the time of the shooting, Robertson was already on a GPS tether for previous offenses, which placed him at the scene of the crime.
The motive behind the killing was reportedly for Jones's gun. In May 2024, Royal Robertson was sentenced for the murder of Quwang-Tri Jones. A Berrien County judge sentenced the now-teenager to 40 to 80 years in prison, offering the possibility of parole after four decades.
