Delray Lloyd, a 27-year-old Black male, tragically lost his life on Sunday, August 8, 2021, in his former hometown of Benton Harbor, Michigan. Though he had relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana, at a young age with his mother, he was back in the city on that fateful evening. Lloyd was inside the Sunny Spot convenience store on Pipestone Road when he was fatally shot. The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety responded to the incident just after 5 p.m. and found Lloyd deceased at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect. The Berrien County Sheriff's Department and the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety identified 24-year-old Daniel K. Autrey as a person of interest. A multiple-count warrant was issued for Autrey's arrest, and authorities sought public assistance in locating him as he remained at large. The charges filed against Autrey included open murder, felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of ammunition by a felon, and felony firearm. A few days later, on August 11, 2021, Daniel Autrey turned himself in to authorities at the Berrien County Jail and was taken into custody.
Delray, known to some as 'Fella' or by his artist name 'F.GAMO,' was a father to four children and had a passion for creating rap music. He was also an employee at Expert Edge Lawn and Landscaping in Indianapolis. His death prompted an outpouring of grief from his family and the community, who called for justice. Following his arrest, Daniel Autrey faced trial for the murder of Delray Lloyd. He was ultimately convicted and sentenced to serve 52 to 77 years in prison for the crime.
