In a tragic turn of events on New Year's Eve, 36-year-old Theresa Janay Watts was shot and killed in her home on McKinney Street in Detroit, Michigan. Her body, along with that of her friend, 35-year-old Tarance Daivon Smith, was discovered on New Year's Day 2018.
The grim discovery was made after a domestic dispute escalated to a fatal encounter. Authorities allege that Theresa's estranged husband, Robert Bryant Watts, 36, went to her residence demanding to see their three children.
When Theresa refused his request, he reportedly brandished a gun and shot her. The couple was reportedly separated and in the process of getting a divorce.
Following the shooting of his wife, Robert Watts is said to have ordered their children into a bathroom. He then allegedly shot and killed Tarance Smith, who was sitting at the kitchen table. The children were physically unharmed and were later found at a relative's home.
Robert Watts was arrested shortly after the bodies were discovered. He was subsequently charged with two counts of premeditated murder and two counts of felony firearms. His arraignment took place in the 36th District Court, and he faced a probable cause conference on January 12, 2018.
