On the evening of November 8, 2024, a violent incident unfolded at the intersection of East 75th Street and The Paseo in Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the life of 66-year-old Dennis Roy Griffin. Just before 6:00 p.m., police officers were dispatched to the scene following reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, they discovered Griffin unresponsive inside his vehicle, a green GMC Sierra pickup truck, which was stopped and blocking the southbound lanes of The Paseo.
First responders transported him to a local hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at 6:21 p.m.
Investigators determined that the shooting was likely the result of a road rage altercation. According to court documents released months later, witnesses and surveillance footage indicated that Griffin’s truck had swerved to cut off a white SUV driven by a younger man. The two vehicles then pulled up next to each other at a traffic light. It was at this moment that the driver of the SUV allegedly fired multiple shots into Griffin’s truck through the driver's side window. The suspect vehicle then fled the scene, leaving Griffin mortally wounded.
Months of investigation led authorities to identify 21-year-old Isaiah Francis as the primary suspect. In April 2025, prosecutors officially charged Francis with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Griffin's death. While Francis allegedly admitted to being the driver involved in the altercation, he claimed that a passenger in the backseat was responsible for firing the fatal shots. However, prosecutors proceeded with charges against Francis, citing witness accounts and evidence collected from the scene. He was held on a $150,000 bond pending further legal proceedings.
Dennis Griffin was remembered by his community as a devoted family man and a United States Army veteran. Born in Mississippi, he had lived in the Kansas City area for decades, graduating from Central High School in 1974. He was known for his sharp sense of style, his love for old Cadillac cars, and his passionate support for the Kansas City Chiefs. A dedicated member of the Greater Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, he left behind a wife of 45 years, a daughter, and grandchildren.
