A Hispanic male, Muñoz Benitez was a mechanic at the establishment where the tragic events unfolded. The incident began around 11:30 a.m. when police received reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, they discovered Muñoz Benitez unresponsive in the parking lot, suffering from gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting pointed to 28-year-old Tyrell Young as the alleged perpetrator. Young had reportedly gone to the auto body shop to confront Muñoz Benitez, accusing the mechanic of stealing a television from his Chevrolet Camaro, which had been serviced at the shop. The argument between the two men escalated dramatically. Surveillance footage from the scene captured the heated exchange, showing Young drawing a concealed firearm and shooting Muñoz Benitez multiple times. According to witness accounts, the assault did not end with the shooting; Young allegedly continued to attack Muñoz Benitez after he had fallen, punching and pistol-whipping him.
Following the incident, law enforcement swiftly identified and arrested Tyrell Young. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action. During police questioning, Young asserted that he had acted in self-defense, claiming that Muñoz Benitez had 'swung on him.' However, the evidence, particularly the surveillance video of the encounter, contradicted his version of events, leading to the filing of formal charges.
