In the early morning hours of June 14, 1971, a horrific scene unfolded inside a red-brick house on Hazelwood Street in Detroit, Michigan. Among the victims of what would become known as the 'Hazelwood massacre' was Katherine Betty Basser, a 22-year-old African-American woman. She, along with seven others, was fatally shot in what remains the city's largest mass murder. The apartment where the killings took place was described by investigators as a narcotics den.
