In Muskegon, Michigan, a young man's life was cut short in a fatal shooting that stemmed from a heated dispute between his father and a neighbor. Anthony James 'AJ' Federighe, a 22-year-old male, was killed on September 25, 2018, at a condominium complex on Muskegon Lake. The man responsible for his death, Paul Gabriel, who was 63 at the time of the sentencing, had been embroiled in a year-long feud with AJ's father, Tony Federighe.
The conflict between Gabriel and Tony Federighe had escalated over time, with both men unsuccessfully seeking personal protection orders against each other. The animosity took a dark turn, with Gabriel reportedly engaging in bizarre and threatening behavior. He was accused of denting Tony Federighe's vehicle, slashing his tires, and peering into his windows. The situation became so untenable that the Federighe family was in the process of moving to escape the harassment. Months before the fatal shooting, Gabriel had allegedly threatened to kill Tony Federighe.
On the day of the incident, the escalating tensions culminated in a physical altercation between Gabriel and AJ Federighe in the condominium's parking garage. A couple who also lived at the complex intervened and broke up the fight. As they were walking away with AJ, Gabriel pointed a gun in their direction and fired, striking the young man in the chest.
Following the shooting, Paul Gabriel was arrested and charged with open murder. In a subsequent trial, a Muskegon County Circuit Court jury found him guilty of first-degree murder. In January 2022, Gabriel was sentenced to life in prison for the killing of Anthony 'AJ' Federighe. During the sentencing, AJ's mother, Buffy Schichtel, described how Gabriel, once a friend of Tony Federighe, had become obsessed with him, leading to the tragic and senseless death of her son.
