In the early morning hours of November 3, 2019, the life of 31-year-old Tarell Marquise Mapp was tragically cut short in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Mapp was fatally shot in the chest while attending an after-hours party at a commercial strip mall on 28th Street SE. Grand Rapids police were already present at the location, responding to calls about a fight that had broken out at the gathering.
As officers were managing the large crowd, gunshots rang out from inside one of the businesses.
In the ensuing chaos, police discovered Mapp with a severe gunshot wound. Despite their immediate life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident marked the city's 14th homicide of the year. The business where the party was held, a car wash and detailing shop, had recently been cited by the city for improperly operating as a nightclub.
Described as the 'glue' that held his large family together, Tarell Mapp was one of thirteen siblings and a father to thirteen children himself. His family had previously endured the pain of losing another sibling to violence two years prior. In the wake of his death, they held a vigil to honor his memory, expressing their profound grief.
As of the latest available information, no arrests have been made in connection with Tarell Mapp's murder, and the case remains an open investigation. The Grand Rapids Police Department has continued to appeal to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information to come forward. In April 2021, investigators released photographs of four individuals they believe were possible witnesses to the shooting, hoping to identify and speak with them. Police Chief Eric Payne publicly stated, 'When it comes to murder in our community, silence only supports the violence,' emphasizing that the shooting occurred at a 'packed party with plenty of people around.' The authorities and Mapp's family are still seeking answers and justice in his unsolved killing.
