On April 9, 2021, a violent tragedy unfolded in Grand Rapids, Michigan, claiming the life of Nicholas Stephan Purnell, a 28-year-old Black male. The incident occurred on a Friday morning at the Stuyvesant Apartments, a residential building located on Madison Avenue SE near the intersection with Cherry Street. Police officers were dispatched to the scene just before noon following reports of a shooting. upon their arrival, first responders discovered Purnell suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite the efforts of emergency personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Detectives with the Grand Rapids Police Department launched a homicide investigation immediately following the shooting. Initial reports did not publicly clarify the specific circumstances or motive that led to the fatal altercation, but investigators quickly identified a person of interest. The case progressed rapidly over the weekend, leading authorities to focus their attention on a local teenager. By the following Monday, law enforcement announced that a suspect had been taken into custody regarding Purnell's death.
The suspect was identified as 17-year-old Andrew Jermaine Hollowell. Rather than being apprehended in a manhunt, Hollowell turned himself in to the authorities on the Monday following the shooting. He was subsequently booked into the Kent County Correctional Facility. Prosecutors charged the teenager with open murder and felony firearm possession in connection with the killing of Nicholas Purnell. At the time of his arraignment, the investigation was ongoing as police continued to piece together the events that transpired outside the apartment complex that morning.
