In the early evening chill of a Grand Rapids, Michigan winter, the life of 23-year-old Michael George Eastwood was tragically cut short on December 6, 2020. Known for his kind heart and readiness to lend a hand, Michael was a cherished son, brother, and a loving father to his daughter. His sudden and violent death left an irreplaceable void in the lives of his family and friends.
That Sunday evening, events unfolded dramatically near the intersection of Burton Street SE and Division
Avenue. Police attention was drawn to a vehicle driving erratically. Before officers could intervene, the car crashed into a nearby building. Inside, they discovered Michael, the driver, suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest. First responders rendered aid at the scene, and he was quickly transported to Mercy Health St. Mary's hospital. Despite their efforts, Michael was pronounced dead. The Kent County Medical Examiner's Office would later rule his death a homicide. Investigators believed the shooting may have been connected to a shots fired call they had received around the same time in the area of Burton Street and Collins Avenue SE.
The investigation into Michael's death led to the arrest of 18-year-old Lonnie Sanders. In connection with the fatal shooting, Sanders faced charges of second-degree murder, felony firearm, and felonious assault. In December of 2021, a year after Michael's death, Sanders pleaded no contest to the charges brought against him. This plea brought the legal proceedings closer to a conclusion, offering a semblance of justice for Michael's grieving family.
In February 2022, Lonnie Sanders was sentenced for his role in Michael Eastwood's death. He received a prison sentence of 21 to 36 years. In addition to his time in prison, the court ordered him to pay $15,500 in restitution. While the sentencing marked the legal resolution of the case, the profound loss of a young man in his prime continues to be deeply felt by his loved ones and the Grand Rapids community.
