In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a violent encounter cut short the life of 28-year-old Jashaun Kelrick Morgan. On June 2, 2024, Morgan, a Black male, was fatally shot in a downtown parking lot near the intersection of Cesar E. Chavez Avenue SW and Cherry Street. The incident, which unfolded around 1 a.m. in a popular entertainment district, also resulted in the death of 31-year-old Eliot Flores and left a third individual with a leg injury.

Rapids Police Department responded to the scene to find a chaotic situation with one man already deceased. Morgan was transported to a local hospital where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The Kent County Medical Examiner later ruled both his and Flores' deaths as homicides. Investigators recovered three firearms from the scene, including two handguns and a rifle, suggesting a significant exchange of gunfire. Police Chief Eric Winstrom indicated that the shooting was not a random act of violence, stating that the individuals involved were known to one another.
The investigation into the deadly shootout led authorities to identify twin brothers, Xavier and Ezekiel Ramos, as the other parties involved in the incident. According to court documents, the altercation began after the Ramos brothers followed Morgan and Flores out of a bar and into the nearby parking lot. It is alleged that as the brothers approached, Morgan drew a firearm, leading to an exchange of gunfire between him and the Ramos brothers.
On August 2, 2024, authorities arrested 25-year-old Xavier Ramos. He was subsequently charged with open murder, but only in connection with the death of Eliot Flores. Prosecutors argued that Flores was unarmed and running away when he was shot in the back. However, no charges were filed against either Xavier or Ezekiel Ramos for the death of Jashaun Morgan. The decision was based on a claim of self-defense in the initial armed confrontation. Ezekiel Ramos was also not charged in connection with the incident. Xavier Ramos has pleaded not guilty to the charge against him and is awaiting trial.
