In the spring of 2020, the life of Ante Andrew Webb, a 43-year-old Black/African American male from Grand Rapids, Michigan, was tragically cut short. On the evening of April 12th, police responded to a call about a shooting at the Nature Trail Apartments in Kentwood, a community near Grand Rapids. Upon their arrival at the apartment building on Nature Trail Drive, they discovered Webb suffering from a single gunshot wound.
Despite the immediate first-aid efforts by those at the scene, his injury was too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Webb's death soon focused on a suspect, 36-year-old Kenneth Durell Byrd. At the time of his identification as a suspect in Webb's murder, Byrd was already incarcerated at the Kent County Correctional Facility on unrelated charges. In November 2020, the Kentwood Police Department arrested Byrd in connection with the fatal shooting. The Kent County Prosecutor's Office formally charged him with homicide-felony murder, armed robbery, and felony firearm.
Following his arrest, Kenneth Durell Byrd was arraigned on the charges, and a bond was set at $1 million. The legal process moved forward, culminating in a trial where Byrd was convicted for the murder of Ante Andrew Webb. On October 27, 2021, Byrd was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder conviction. He also received an additional sentence for the felony firearms conviction, ensuring he would be held accountable for his actions on that fatal April evening.
