In the early morning hours of Saturday, April 18, 2015, the life of German Antonio Rodriguez-Duarte, a 34-year-old male, was tragically cut short in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His body was discovered lying between houses in the 500 block of Hall Street SW, near Caufield Avenue. Emergency services were called to the scene, but Rodriguez-Duarte was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound.
At the time of the initial investigation, authorities struggled to locate his next of kin, reaching out to the public for assistance. He was later identified as a Honduran citizen who was financially supporting his parents back in his hometown of La Ceiba.
The investigation into the homicide of German Antonio Rodriguez-Duarte led Grand Rapids police to identify a primary suspect months later. In December 2015, authorities announced that they suspected Demario Antwan Chandler, who was 30 years old at the time, was the shooter. Chandler was already incarcerated in the Cooper Street Correctional Facility in Jackson on unrelated weapons charges when he was named as the suspect in Rodriguez-Duarte's murder. This breakthrough in the case brought a renewed focus on bringing justice for Rodriguez-Duarte.
Following the identification of the suspect, the Kent County Prosecutor's Office issued a four-count felony warrant for Demario Antwan Chandler. The charges against him included open murder, felony firearm, possession of a firearm by a felon, and a fourth-offense habitual offender notice. Arrangements were made to have Chandler transported from the state prison back to Grand Rapids to be formally arraigned on the charges related to the death of German Antonio Rodriguez-Duarte. The bringing of charges against an already imprisoned individual highlighted the persistent nature of the investigation and the commitment of law enforcement to resolve the case.
