In the late hours of a Wednesday evening in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the life of Brice Carrington Jackson, a 27-year-old Black man, was tragically cut short. On September 14, 2016, Jackson was in an alley between Dorchester and Norwich avenues when he was shot. He was rushed to Mercy Health Saint Mary's Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.
Originally from Peoria, Illinois, Jackson had moved to Grand Rapids with his mother.
He was known as an active and positive force in his community, serving as a youth director at his church and a leader for after-school and summer programs for young people. Described as a loving father to his daughter, he was also an avid basketball player and a diligent worker who was cherished by his family and friends. His death was lamented as a 'senseless act of violence' by those who knew him.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Grand Rapids Police Department began their investigation into the homicide. They were able to provide a limited description of a potential suspect, described as a Black male, approximately 5'5' tall and weighing around 125 pounds, who was last seen wearing dark clothing. Authorities appealed to the public for any information that might lead to an arrest in the case.
