In the autumn of 2019, the life of 19-year-old Alexander 'Alex' Robert Johnson was cut short in Kalamazoo, Michigan. A graduate of Loy Norrix High School, Alex was a student at Western Michigan University and was lovingly known to his family and friends. He was born on December 15, 1999, and passed away on Wednesday, November 13, 2019.
The circumstances of his death unfolded in the early morning hours at the Hidden Hills Apartments.
Following a dispute, Alex was shot and subsequently died at a local hospital. The incident led to the arrest of 22-year-old Gabreon Wells-Lindsey, an acquaintance of Johnson's. The two had reportedly been engaged in an argument prior to the fatal shooting.
Wells-Lindsey was charged with open murder, carrying a concealed weapon, and felony firearm. The case proceeded to a jury trial where the defense argued that the shooting was an act of self-defense. Ultimately, the jury found Wells-Lindsey not guilty of murder and the felony firearm charge. He was, however, found guilty of carrying a concealed weapon. For this conviction, he was sentenced to 711 days in jail but was given credit for time already served, leading to his release.
