Deshowne Andre Kirkland, a 21-year-old resident of Grand Rapids, Michigan, tragically lost his life on May 12, 2020. Kirkland was fatally shot at Garfield Cemetery, located on the southeast side of Grand Rapids. The incident occurred during a vigil held in memory of his friend, Jordan Brown, who had been killed exactly one year prior. Kirkland's death was part of a broader surge in violence in Grand Rapids, which saw a record number of homicides in 2020.
