In the late summer evening of August 22, 2016, a tragedy unfolded in Grand Rapids, Michigan, that would cut short the life of 39-year-old Kenneth Kirkwood. A man known for his warm personality, Kirkwood was diligently working on renovating a vacant house on College Avenue SE. He and a coworker decided to take a break on the porch around 9 p.m., a simple act that placed them in the path of unexpected violence.
