In the autumn of 2017, the life of 22-year-old Daran Adams-Jackson was tragically cut short in Grand Rapids, Michigan. On the evening of Sunday, October 22, Adams-Jackson was found unresponsive in his apartment at the Cambridge Square Apartments on Mason Street NE. His girlfriend made the devastating discovery after he failed to pick her up from work. Medical units and police who responded to the scene confirmed that he was deceased, having suffered a gunshot wound.
An autopsy later confirmed that the cause of death was a homicide.
The investigation into the shooting led police to a suspect, 20-year-old Deandre Lamar-Dante Johnson. He was arrested in January 2018 in connection with the homicide. At the time of his arrest, Johnson was already in custody on an unrelated charge. He was subsequently charged with homicide-open murder, felon in possession of a firearm, and felony firearm. Authorities also noted he would be charged as a habitual offender. Reports indicated that Johnson and Adams-Jackson had been acquainted since high school.
In February 2019, a Kent County jury found Deandre Lamar-Dante Johnson guilty of second-degree murder for the death of Daran Adams-Jackson. The trial revealed the brutal nature of the crime, with evidence showing that Adams-Jackson had been shot multiple times. During the sentencing in March 2019, Cynthia Lynn Jackson, the victim's mother, confronted her son's killer in court, calling him a coward. She expressed the profound loss of her son, who was a young father and whose greatest aspiration was to be a dad.
Johnson was sentenced to a term of 40 to 75 years in prison for the murder. He also received concurrent sentences for being a felon in possession of a firearm and for the felony firearm charge. Following the sentencing, Johnson expressed his intention to appeal the jury's decision and offered an apology to both his family and the family of Daran Adams-Jackson for their loss. His subsequent appeal was unsuccessful, and he is currently incarcerated at the Muskegon Correctional Facility.
