In the late hours of a summer night in Detroit, a domestic dispute escalated into a fatal encounter that ended the life of 38-year-old Cory Jackson. The events of August 14, 2020, were precipitated by an argument between Jackson and his longtime girlfriend. According to the girlfriend, Jackson had been drinking and became angry.
The conflict reportedly turned violent when Jackson allegedly choked his girlfriend and, as she tried to flee, ran her over with his vehicle.
A passerby intervened, allowing the woman to escape and return to her home on Steel Street on the city's west side. However, Jackson was reportedly waiting for her there, armed and threatening to kill her.
Witnessing the threat to his mother, her 14-year-old son retrieved a gun from inside the house and shot Jackson. The teenager was subsequently detained by the Detroit Police. In an interview following the incident, the boy expressed both his love for Jackson and his perceived duty to protect his mother, stating, 'I'm supposed to protect my my mama at any cost'. The mother also expressed her sorrow and regret over the situation, acknowledging a history of violence in her relationship with Jackson, including previous instances where he had allegedly discharged a firearm in the home.
