In the early hours of July 18, 2023, a verbal altercation at the intersection of Tireman Avenue and St. Mary's Street in Detroit, Michigan, turned fatal for 23-year-old Javontae Dayquan Gardner. Gardner, a Black/African American male, was shot multiple times in the abdomen at approximately 2:18 a.m. Detroit police officers were dispatched to the scene and found Gardner with critical injuries.
He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but tragically, he succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced deceased.
The investigation into the shooting led the Detroit Police Department to a suspect with remarkable speed. Later that same day, authorities arrested 30-year-old Nino Denzel-Wesley Red, also a resident of Detroit. It is alleged that what began as a verbal dispute between Red and Gardner escalated to the point where Red produced a handgun and fired multiple times, fatally wounding Gardner before fleeing the scene.
Following his arrest, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office charged Nino Denzel-Wesley Red with one count of first-degree murder, one count of felon in possession of a firearm, and two counts of felony firearm. He was arraigned in 36th District Court on July 21, 2023, and was remanded to jail. A Probable Cause Conference was scheduled for August 3, 2023, with a Preliminary Examination set for August 10, 2023.
