On May 23, 2021, at approximately 9:15 p.m., officers from the Muskegon Department of Public Safety were dispatched to the 700 block of West Forest Avenue after reports of gunfire. Arriving at the scene near the intersection with Seaway Drive, they discovered Mitchell inside a vehicle, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Emergency medical services rushed Mitchell to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he succumbed to them later that evening. The case was immediately classified as a homicide, prompting an extensive investigation by local law enforcement. Despite their efforts and public appeals for information, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
Known affectionately as 'T.J.,' Mitchell was a 2011 graduate of Muskegon High School and was remembered for his love of making jokes, playing basketball, and producing music.
