He possessed a deep skill for machinery and a passion for working on cars, often spending his free time attending concerts, collecting t-shirts, and enjoying football games.
His life was cut short in an incident of violence that launched an immediate homicide investigation by local authorities.
Detectives with the Jackson Police Department quickly identified a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting. The investigation pointed toward 31-year-old Lance James Hines, a white male, as the primary person of interest. Law enforcement officials circulated information regarding Hines and his vehicle, a gray 2012 Toyota Prius, hoping to locate him before further violence could occur. The search for the suspect intensified in the hours following the death of Rutz.
On the morning of October 22, 2021, just one day after the homicide, police received a tip that the suspect's vehicle was parked at an Advance Auto Parts store on West Prospect Street in Jackson. Officers descended on the location, surrounding the gray Prius to apprehend the fugitive. Before they could take him into custody, a single gunshot was heard from inside the car. Upon closer inspection, authorities discovered that Hines had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, effectively ending the manhunt and the possibility of criminal prosecution in the case.
