Emarion Flowers, a 22-year-old male, was fatally shot in Jackson, Michigan on May 16, 2025. The incident occurred on a Friday afternoon when Flowers was reportedly talking to someone in a car. Following the shooting, he was transported to Henry Ford Jackson Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. It was later determined that he had been shot five times.
Tragically, his mother noted that her son was killed on her birthday.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of 22-year-old Joseph Gabriel O'Rourke on May 19, 2025. O'Rourke was taken into custody on County Farm Road and Springport Road in Blackman Township. He was subsequently arraigned on charges of Open Murder, Carrying a Concealed Weapon, and Felony Firearm. Authorities stated that O'Rourke and Flowers had a 'long-standing issue.' According to police, O'Rourke invited Flowers over to talk on the day of the shooting.
During legal proceedings, O'Rourke admitted to pulling the trigger but claimed he acted in self-defense, alleging that he saw Flowers reach for a gun. However, a witness to the event testified that they did not see a weapon on Emarion Flowers at the time of the incident. O'Rourke is being held without bond, and it will be up to a jury to determine whether the shooting was an act of murder or self-defense. A probable cause conference was scheduled for late May, with an exam hearing set for early June before Honorable Allison Bates. The charge of Open Murder carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.
