In the summer of 2025, the life of 17-year-old Tae’Sean D. Bartkowiak of Jackson, Michigan, was tragically cut short. The young man, a student at Northwest High School known for his love of football and basketball, was also a devoted father who worked at McDonald's to support his son. His warm smile was a source of joy for his family and friends, with whom he loved spending his time.
The series of events that led to his untimely death began on June 4, 2025, at a residence on Peacock
Walk in Blackman Township. Tae’Sean was with his longtime friend, 22-year-old Julian Anthony Powell. According to a witness, Powell, who appeared to be intoxicated, was carelessly handling a revolver, poking Bartkowiak with it before the weapon discharged, striking Tae’Sean in the head. For nearly three weeks, he fought for his life, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries on June 27, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.
Following an investigation, authorities located and arrested Julian Anthony Powell. He admitted to firing the gun but claimed the shooting was accidental, alleging it happened while he was attempting to purchase marijuana from Bartkowiak. Powell has since been charged with second-degree murder and a felony firearm offense. He is currently being held in the Jackson County Jail on a $1 million bond as he awaits the continuation of his preliminary hearing, which is pending the final autopsy report.
