Se’Dale Goodwin was a 16-year-old Black male remembered by his loved ones as fun, hilarious, and caring. Known to friends and family by nicknames like “8 dale” and “Big bro,” he was described as a strong and brave young man who would always make sure other people were taken care of before he focused on himself. His family shared their love for him, with one relative writing, “You were and always will be my baby.”
On the evening of November 1, 2021, in Jackson, Michigan,
Goodwin was walking with two other people. At approximately 6:20 p.m., near the area of West High Street and Sheldon Street, an attacker fired multiple shots in their direction. Goodwin was struck once in the upper leg. First responders arrived to find him bleeding severely, and he was rushed to Henry Ford Allegiance Health for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to the gunshot wound and died at the hospital.
The Jackson Police Department began an investigation into the homicide. In a significant development in the case, investigators identified a suspect, Jamarion Richardson, who was subsequently taken into custody. Prosecutors charged Richardson with one count of open murder and one count of felony firearm for his role in the fatal shooting.
The case against Richardson was bound over to the Jackson County Circuit Court. He later pleaded guilty to fatally shooting Se’Dale Goodwin. In December 2023, a judge sentenced Jamarion Richardson to serve 23 to 40 years in prison for the crime.
