In the early moments of March 9, 2010, a domestic disturbance call led to a tragic end for a dedicated public servant. James David Bonneau, a 26-year-old Caucasian male and a police officer with the Jackson Police Department, responded to a follow-up on a domestic incident report at a residence on Mitchell Street. What began as a routine investigation swiftly escalated into a violent confrontation that would cut his promising life and career short.
Officer Bonneau, along with an officer
from the Blackman Township Department of Public Safety, arrived at the home of 63-year-old Elvin Potts. As the officers engaged with the suspect, he became increasingly aggressive. A struggle ensued, and in the chaos, Potts managed to retrieve a. 357 caliber handgun that was concealed under a couch cushion. Without warning, he opened fire on the two officers.
A bullet struck Officer Bonneau, inflicting a mortal wound. Despite the severity of his injury, his dedication to his duty and his fellow officers was unwavering. In his final moments, he was able to relay critical information to dispatch, alerting them that shots had been fired, officers were down, and the suspect had also been neutralized. His courageous actions ensured that responding officers were aware of the tactical situation they were entering. The other officer was also wounded during the exchange. The suspect, Elvin Potts, was shot and killed by the officers at the scene.
James Bonneau had served with the Jackson Police Department for two years, having been hired as a recruit in July 2007 and promoted to officer in November of that same year. He was remembered by his superiors and colleagues as a hardworking, compassionate, and eager officer who was passionate about his job. He was a man known for his kindness and dedication, not only to his profession but also to the community he served. He is survived by his parents, a brother, a sister, and his fiancée. In a lasting tribute to his sacrifice, the West Avenue Bridge in Jackson was renamed the Officer James Bonneau Memorial Bridge in September 2014.
