On the evening of October 26, 2021, a 59-year-old woman named Yvette Sewell was returning to her home on St. Clair Street in Detroit, Michigan, after 9 p.m. As she was about to enter her house, a place where she had lived for over two decades, she was ambushed and tragically shot four times, her life taken from her on her own porch. The unknown assailant or assailants fled the scene, possibly in a black pickup truck with a getaway driver.
For six hours, her body lay undiscovered.
The brutal and sudden loss of Yvette, a mother of nine, sent shockwaves of grief and devastation through her family. Her children have been vocal in their anguish and their desperate pleas for justice for their murdered mother. They remember her as a woman who was a cherished mother and grandmother, and the violent end to her life has left an unfillable void.
The Detroit police have investigated the homicide, and Crime Stoppers has offered a reward of up to $2,500 for any information that leads to an arrest in the case. Despite these efforts, Yvette Sewell's murder remains unsolved, and no arrests have been made, leaving her family with no sense of closure.
Tragically, the violence that touched the Sewell family did not end with Yvette's death. Just a few months later, her daughter, LaShon Marshall, her grandson, Caleb Harris, and LaShon's boyfriend, Aaron Benson, were also murdered. While a 16-year-old has been charged as an adult in connection with those three deaths, the person or persons responsible for ending Yvette Sewell's life are still at large. Her family and community continue to hope that someone will come forward with the information needed to bring her killer to justice.
