In the early hours of March 22, 2022, the life of 34-year-old Shauntel Lewis, a female from Detroit, Michigan, was tragically cut short. Police were called to a residence on Haverhill Street following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival at the home, officers discovered Shauntel unresponsive in the basement, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
Medical responders pronounced her dead at the scene.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death quickly led authorities to a suspect. Later that same day, police arrested Shauntel's 37-year-old husband, Taquan Miguel White. It is alleged that he shot his wife with a handgun before leaving the residence. The motive for the shooting was not immediately made public. An in-depth investigation into the incident was launched by the Detroit Police Department.
Following his arrest, Taquan Miguel White was charged with several serious offenses in connection with his wife's death. The charges brought against him by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office included one count of first-degree murder, a charge that carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole if convicted. In addition to the murder charge, he also faced accusations of tampering with evidence, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and two counts of felony firearm. White was arraigned and subsequently remanded to jail to await further legal proceedings. His probable cause conference was scheduled for early April 2022, with a preliminary examination set for the middle of the same month.
