On January 21st, Simpson County Sheriff Eugene Dickson Hubbard, a 28-year-old male, was killed in the line of duty. The incident began when Sheriff Hubbard and his deputies attempted to arrest a man who had barricaded himself inside a house.
As the lawmen approached the residence, the suspect opened fire. A gunfight ensued, during which Sheriff Hubbard was fatally wounded. Two of his deputies also sustained injuries in the exchange of gunfire. The suspect, who was responsible for the death of the sheriff and the wounding of the other deputies, was shot and killed during the confrontation.
