Deputy Sheriff James P. Rutland, aged 53, tragically lost his life on February 21, 1997, in Mendenhall, Mississippi. He was serving with the Jefferson Davis County Sheriff's Department at the time of his death. Deputy Rutland, along with Deputy Sheriff Thomas Bourne, was transporting a prisoner to the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility in Rankin County. The prisoner, who had been convicted of manslaughter, aggravated assault, and escape, was beginning a 40-year prison term.
