In the summer of 1990, the community of Mendenhall, Mississippi, was shaken by the violent death of one of its own. James Boyakin Barnett, a 35-year-old male Deputy Sheriff with the Simpson County Sheriff's Office, lost his life in the line of duty on the evening of Tuesday, June 26th. His death stemmed from a response to a domestic dispute that had escalated to a dangerous level. A man, in the throes of a domestic conflict, had set his own house on fire.
