In the early morning hours of Sunday, November 10, 2019, a gathering at a house party on R T Lake Road in Mendenhall, Mississippi, took a tragic turn, ending the life of 44-year-old Willie G. Davis Jr. A verbal altercation erupted at the party, prompting Davis to leave the event. He walked to a vehicle parked at the intersection of Emmitt Brown and R T Lake Road.
As Davis and his companions were getting into their vehicle, they were confronted by several individuals.
The confrontation quickly escalated to violence. Davis was severely beaten and then shot by one of the men. Following the assault, his family members transported him to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.
The Simpson County Sheriff's Office immediately launched a homicide investigation. Their attention soon focused on two brothers, Reuben Lyrell Mayes and R'Mand Lashard 'Smoove' Mayes, along with Reuben's wife, Amanda Rochelle Warren. With the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, a search for the suspects was initiated.
On Tuesday, November 19, 2019, the efforts of law enforcement resulted in the apprehension of the three suspects. Reuben Lyrell Mayes and Amanda Rochelle Warren were taken into custody that afternoon. Later that night, R'Mand Lashard Mayes was also arrested. All three were transported back to Simpson County to face charges related to the death of Willie G. Davis Jr. The Mayes brothers were both charged with first-degree murder, while Amanda Rochelle Warren was charged with hindering prosecution or apprehension. The investigation continued as authorities explored other potential leads in the case.
