In the late hours of a September evening in Simpson County, Mississippi, a domestic dispute escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 29-year-old Arthur Montrel Jackson of Mendenhall. On September 20, 2020, Jackson was shot during the altercation. In the immediate aftermath, his family members rushed him to the Magee General Hospital emergency room in a desperate attempt to save his life.
Despite their efforts and the medical attention he received, Jackson succumbed to his
injuries a short time after arriving at the hospital. His death launched a homicide investigation by the Simpson County Sheriff's Department. Deputies were dispatched to the scene of the domestic violence incident where they took a suspect into custody.
The individual arrested was identified as 39-year-old James Edward Gray Jr. He was initially charged with domestic violence and was being held at the Simpson County Adult Detention Center. Authorities stated at the time that additional charges related to the shooting death of Arthur Jackson were anticipated as the investigation continued.
