On a late September night in Waynesboro, Mississippi, the community was forever changed by a senseless act of violence that claimed the life of one of its own. James Calvin 'Jamie' Walker, a 32-year-old White/Caucasian male, was a dedicated Corporal with the Waynesboro Police Department. On September 28, 2005, while on duty, he conducted a traffic stop on a suspicious van near the city library. As he approached the vehicle, the driver, without warning, opened fire with a shotgun, fatally wounding the officer. The suspect then fled the scene in the van, which was later found abandoned just outside the city limits.
The killing of Corporal Walker sent shockwaves through the small town and sparked an immediate and intensive manhunt. The search for the person responsible was swift and effective. Within approximately three hours of the shooting, authorities apprehended a suspect. He was identified as 33-year-old James Elmer Hartley. The investigation that followed painted a grim picture of a routine traffic stop that turned deadly in an instant.
In the wake of the tragedy, the wheels of justice began to turn. James Elmer Hartley was indicted in January of the following year on a charge of capital murder. He also faced charges of motor vehicle theft and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Due to the high-profile nature of the case, a change of venue was granted for the jury selection to ensure a fair trial, though the trial itself was held in the Wayne County Courthouse, allowing the community that Corporal Walker served to witness the proceedings. On August 27, 2007, James Elmer Hartley was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a close to the legal chapter of a devastating loss for the Waynesboro community. Corporal Walker, who had served with the department for two and a half years, was survived by his two daughters, parents, and two siblings.
