In the small city of Waynesboro, Mississippi, a young man's life was cut short by gunfire. Marcus Sanchez McGill, a 23-year-old male, was fatally shot on the evening of Friday, October 21, 2016. The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. in the 200 block of Sunset Boulevard and Martin Luther King Drive, where police responded to a call of shots fired.

Upon their arrival, officers discovered a chaotic scene. McGill had already been transported to Wayne General Hospital in a private vehicle after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. Despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead at approximately 10:30 p.m. The investigation into the shooting began immediately, with law enforcement working through the night to piece together the events that led to the deadly confrontation.

The following morning, authorities moved swiftly and made an arrest in connection with the homicide. Ernest Lee West Jr., who was also 23 years old at the time, was taken into custody in the early hours of Saturday. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder. During the execution of a search warrant related to the arrest, investigators seized several items that were believed to be potentially involved in the homicide.

In the wake of the shooting, McGill's body was sent to Jackson for an autopsy to officially determine the cause of death as the police continued their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter.
